The designer, Tinker Hatfield came up with the idea of a multipurpose shoe as he was working in the gym and he saw people using two different pairs of shoe: one for running and one for weight training.
In 1987, the Nike Air Trainer hit the scene and was instantly a huge success. Nike decided to develop more technical Air Trainers and more new colorways. The original pair was actually reissued in the mid 1990s.
